Japanese is a high-context language, the same phrase can carry completely different meaning depending on who is speaking, to whom, in what situation, and with what level of formality. Current AI models make these distinctions poorly and inconsistently. They also routinely misread handwritten font styles common in manga, mistranslate onomatopoeia, and produce literal outputs that sound unnatural in English.
More importantly, tone is not something AI currently handles with the subtlety manga requires. The difference between a character sounding cold, aloof, or simply reserved is carried by word choice, sentence rhythm, and register, not just vocabulary. Human translators who know the series, know the characters, and have spent time with the source language make these distinctions instinctively. AI does not.
This will change. In five to ten years, AI-assisted translation, with careful human review, will probably be part of most scanlation workflows. But “AI-assisted with human review” is very different from “AI-generated without human oversight,” and we will not compromise on the latter.
