If you searching for transformers skybound read online, then you are at right place. Many fans are trying to catch up this series because honestly, it is not like the old Transformers comics you maybe read before. Skybound Entertainment started publishing it from October 2023 and since then the series is getting better with every issue.
A New Publisher, A New Direction
Before Skybound, IDW Publishing was handling Transformers comics for many years. Then in end of 2022 they lost the license. Hasbro gave rights to Skybound, which is same company that made Invincible and The Walking Dead. So already you know the quality will be different.
First six issues were written and drawn by Daniel Warren Johnson. Story starts with Spike Witwicky who just lost his older brother. He and his girlfriend Carly find the Ark spacecraft and suddenly the Autobots and Decepticons are awake again on Earth. Megatron is missing from beginning. Optimus Prime is trying to protect humanity while everything is falling apart around him. These early issues move very fast and the emotional part hits you stronger than expected.
It Is Connected to Bigger Universe
One thing many readers do not realize at first, this Transformers series is part of something called the Energon Universe. Skybound is building shared story across Transformers, Void Rivals, G.I. Joe, and also M.A.S.K. which is coming June 2026. Characters from one book sometimes appear in another. Events in one title affect other titles too.
You do not have to read every series for enjoying Transformers. It works fine alone. But if you also pick up Void Rivals you will start seeing how much bigger the whole plan is.
Robert Kirkman Joined from Issue 25
From issue 25 the writing job went to Robert Kirkman. He is creator of Invincible and The Walking Dead so people had big expectations. He did not disappoint. At end of issue 30 something very surprising happened. Optimus Prime gave the Matrix of Leadership to Elita One. She became Elita Prime and new leader of Autobots. Some Autobots went with her back to Cybertron. Others stayed on Earth with Optimus.
This split made the story more interesting because now two Autobot groups are going in different directions. And both sides have their own reasons. Kirkman writes disagreements between characters in very realistic way, not just for creating drama.
Issue 32 Story
Issue 32 came out on May 13, 2026 and it starts completely new story arc. Elita Prime goes back to Cybertron with her team and right away they fall into ambush. Shockwave is waiting for them. His body is damaged, missing arm and part of head, but he is still controlling the Decepticons.
Jason Howard is new series artist starting from this issue. His drawing style is little bit loose and expressive, somewhat similar to Transformers Animated show from 2007. It fits very well with the action in this book. Ultra Magnus also gets a strong moment in this issue where he faces Shockwave directly. It pays off the pain his character went through in earlier issues.
Two Eisner Awards
This Skybound Transformers series already won two Eisner Awards. These are very respected awards in comic book world. The series deserves them because it does not treat characters like toys. Spike’s grief for his brother is not just background detail, it affects how he behaves in every situation. Optimus feels the weight of his decisions in real way. Even smaller characters get proper moments that feel like they belong in the story.
This is what makes it different from normal franchise comics. The story happens to have giant robots but it is actually about people and their choices.
