Where is Mount Olympus located in Percy Jackson?

In Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series, Olympus isn’t on the Greek mountain at all – it’s hidden in New York City. The gods’ home is actually anchored at the top of Manhattan’s Empire State Building. In the books, Olympus sits on the mythical “600th floor” of the skyscraper. This is a magical floor unknown to normal mortals; for example, Annabeth mentions a Camp Half-Blood field trip to the “600th floor” as an annual event. Percy Jackson gains access by proving his divinity (showing Zeus’s Master Bolt to the security guard) to get a key to the secret elevator. In short, modern Olympus is “far above the Empire State Building” in New York – not atop a Greek peak.

Mount Olympus began in Greece – the real mountain shown above (Mytikas peak) was the original home of the Olympian gods. However, Riordan’s mythology explains that the gods’ city moves westward as civilization’s center shifts. Chiron explicitly says Olympus follows the “flame” of Western Civilization, relocating from Greece to Rome to other empires as history progressed. When America became the focal point of Western power, the gods moved Olympus to New York. As one source notes, “When the center of Western Civilization became America, Olympus moved itself to America… It anchored itself at the top of the Empire State Building”. In other words, Olympus “travels” – it’s the mythic seat of divine rule wherever humanity’s power is strongest.

The Empire State Building: Olympus’s New Address

The Empire State Building now serves as the secret home of the gods. It’s enchanted so ordinary people can’t see or enter Olympus. In the series, a regular security guard claims “there is no 600th floor” to everyone, but gives demigods a key if they prove themselves. Once inside, an elevator magically takes visitors straight up above the 86th floor to the gods’ city. Notably, the Olympian gods meet twice a year in their skyscraper-top palace – at the winter and summer solstices – to hold divine councils. (In the books, Percy even asks Zeus to make the top of the Empire State Building glow blue after the final battle, showing they truly are on Mt. Olympus).

The idea is that the building itself has divine protections. The four wind gods guard the skies around it, making it impossible to reach Olympus by conventional flight. That means enemies must take the special elevator to attack. Indeed, in The Last Olympian, when the Titans invade, they storm through the building’s hidden floor system to reach Olympus. For us mortals, though, it’s just another floor – hidden by The Mist, a magical veil that makes the true 600th floor invisible and inaccessible to non-gods.

How Heroes Reach Olympus

Percy and his friends have a few different ways of getting to the top of the ESB. In The Lightning Thief, Percy simply asks the guard for a ticket to the 600th floor and shows him proof (Zeus’s stolen bolt) to get a pass. The guard, recognizing a demigod moment, tells him exactly how to reach the gods. In later books, characters use more creative methods. For example, in The Titan’s Curse Percy, Annabeth and Thalia ride flying steeds (pegasi) over New York and drop down at the Empire State Building to enter Olympus from above.

Regardless of method, only those with divine blood or special authorization can enter. The Mist (the series’ magical camouflage) hides Olympus from normal sight, so ordinary people never notice anything amiss. Even with the 600th floor, an invisible magical barrier keeps unwelcome mortals out. To illustrate, when Sally Jackson (Percy’s mom) tried to follow Percy to Olympus, she found herself stuck – only invited demigods can cross the border into the gods’ realm. In short, Olympus’s door is locked tight, but demigods have their own “keys” (like lineage or powerful artifacts) to get in.

Mythical Sites in Modern America

Because Olympus moved to New York, many other classic Greek sites show up in Riordan’s America. Several are mentioned or implied in the books:

The Labyrinth – This endless maze now runs under the United States, with parts weaving beneath the Empire State Building and Brooklyn. (It’s where Percy and friends can teleport around the country.)

The Sea of Monsters – The legendary “sea of monsters” from myth corresponds to the Bermuda Triangle. That’s where magical storms transport heroes to different quest locations.

The Lotus Eaters’ Island – This famous trap is embodied by the Lotus Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Visitors who play there lose their memories, as Percy’s friend Grover discovered.

The Underworld Entrance – Hades’s realm now has its main door in Los Angeles (the DOA Recording Studios).

Mount Tamalpais – In the series, Mount Othrys (home of the Titans) is relocated to the top of Mt. Tamalpais in California.

These modern locations drive home the idea that Riordan’s world fuses ancient myth with today’s world. Mount Olympus in New York is the most famous example, but many other myths have new “addresses” on the American map.

Summary

In Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson universe, Mount Olympus has made a long journey from the mountains of Greece to the skies above Manhattan. Today it rests atop the Empire State Building’s magical 600th floor. This creative twist ties the old myths to the modern world, making New York City “Mount Olympus” for the gods. It’s a key detail in the series – one that shows the gods follow the living world’s center of power, and that even skyscrapers can become “new temples.”
